November 2003 A note from our President. The Hocking River Commission formed in 1991 to serve as nonprofit stewards of the Hocking River through education, promotion of river-corridor recreation and riverfront land protection. We are accomplishing this mission by using mitigation funds we received from the Ohio Department of Transportation; funding earmarked to purchase and protect valued riverside lands along the Hocking River. Riverside lands in their natural state not only serve as pollution filters for drinking water supplies and erosion control; but also offer many recreational opportunities for the public to enjoy. |

In September 2002, we finalized the purchase of the beautiful Falls Mill property north of Logan. We used our ODOT funds and applied for a 75% match from the Clean Ohio fund for the purchase of this property. We felt this site was particularly worth preserving as it is the only natural falls on the Hocking. It has additional historic value as the former site of the Falls Mill in Logan. It is one of the few urban stretches of river now preserved in the mid-Hocking reach. Our next project is to work towards providing canoe and fishing access for the public to enjoy.

Additionally, we have purchased a second property in Athens, again with Clean Ohio funding. This site has good canoe access and consists primarily of woodland. We are currently working to develop canoe access for the public in keeping with our mission of promoting river-corridor recreation.
We are actively involved in searching for other properties that might be added to those already preserved for future public use and enjoyment. However, this process keeps us, as volunteers, pretty busy. Frankly, we need all the help we can get. Whether your interests are fishing, boating, birding, writing, photography, real estate, law, teaching, organizing, or just plain talking, we can use your talent.
With more active members, we can accomplish more. You will find us a congenial and results-oriented group. If your time is limited for being involved on an active level; please consider joining us as a supporting member. Your contribution is tax deductible and will help us to continue to purchase river properties for the enjoyment of future generations of Americans.
